VICTORIA FALLS

Located close to where four countries (Botswana, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe) converge and one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the world, Victoria Falls is known locally as Mosi-oa-Tunya – the “smoke that thunders” – a name that accurately depicts the plume of spray caused by the cascading waters of the Zambezi River. The spray is visible for some distance even before you can hear the roar of the water.

Victoria Falls boasts the largest unbroken curtain of water in the world. Peak flow is reached in May with the low flow in November.

This also though is an area of spectacular scenic beauty, from the Falls themselves to the broad, picturesque course of the Zambezi River upstream and the woodland and plains of the Chobe National Park, just across the border in Botswana.

Wildlife also abounds in the area, particularly in the dry season and can be viewed whilst boating on the river or on game drives in the Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park, one of the few, if not the only location in Zambia, where you can spot white rhino.

Livingstone is the principal town by the Falls and is perhaps the adventure centre of southern Africa, with thrill-seekers having a choice of adrenalin sports such as abseiling, white-water rafting and canoeing, not to mention the highest bungee jump in Africa.

Victoria Falls is a great place to start or finish a safari to any one of Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana or Namibia.
