To the south-west of Arusha you will find Tarangire National Park a gem of a park, bisected by the Tarangire River and bordered to the south by massive swamps. The park is much overlooked in favour of Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti, but it is a gem of a park , rich in wildlife and scenery. Do not overlook it.

VISITING TARANGIRE NATIONAL PARK
During the dry season, day after day of cloudless blue skies seem to suck all the moisture from the landscape, turning the waving grasses to platinum blonde and brittle as straw. The Tarangire River becomes a mere shadow of itself, choked to just a trickle and thronged with wildlife thirsty for its diminishing waters.
Huge herds of elephant, some hundreds in strength dig the damp earth of the riverbed in search of the underground springs whilst wildebeest, zebra, and buffalo mingle with the much rarer eland and Oryx around each shrinking lagoon. The concentrations of wildlife are only exceeded by the Great Migration of the Serengeti.
The best time to visit Tarangire for wildlife viewing or walking is in the dry season from June to October.
