To the north of Zanzibar lies Pemba Island, a small hilly and verdant island, smaller than Zanzibar Island but more densely vegetated and fertile – the early Arab sailors called it ‘El Huthera’, meaning, ‘The Green’. Today, more cloves are grown here than on Zanzibar Island and as you drive across the island large piles lay drying in the sun, their aroma scenting the warm air. Mangos in piles over 6 feet high wait by the roadsides to be trucked to the port at Mkoani and then shipped over to the mainland. Emerald fields are dotted with women in bright kangas attending to crops, whilst wooden dhows glide silently across the turquoise sea. Pemba is a peaceful and relaxing island, but is full of interesting places to visit with quiet coves and lagoons to explore.
