GREYSTOKE MAHALE

For many years the camp in Mahale comprised just simple tents so as not to detract from the setting. So when Greystoke Mahale was built it was important that the new camp didn’t dominate its natural surrounding; the rooms are tucked back into the forest line and offer views of beach and the lake beyond – and nothing else. The main mess is the only structure on the beach and it’s the focal point of camp. Here is where you can look out over the lake to the mountains of the Congo in the haze beyond. The days at Greystoke Mahale start gently as guest eat breakfast whilst waiting to hear news of the chimps and deciding what to do with their day. Evenings end with sundowners on the rocks of the headland with drinks served around the lamp-lit bar whilst the mountains, rising behind camp, disappear into the darkness.

Most guests will see the chimps at least once during a typical three day stay, but a sighting is never guaranteed. Whilst they could be right behind camp one day, the next they could be high in the mountains. Chimp trekking happens during every full day at Greystoke, and you’ll usually always head off – armed with water and snacks – first thing in the morning in two groups of six, accompanied by guides and trackers.
