GARDEN ROUTE

Known as the Garden route for it’s lush greenery and scenic views, its debatable the exact region but it can be classed as covering an area through from Mossel Bay to Knysna, Plettenberg Bay and along towards the coast towards Port Elizabeth the gateway to the Eastern Cape.

There are plenty of activities to be found in this region especially in the From Knysna through to the Tsitsikamma region. As well as some lovely beaches the inland forests are home to one of the largest bungee jumps in Africa, zip wires and rope bridges.

The Fancourt in George is home to 3 golf courses including The Links that is consistently voted as the best course in South Africa.

If you want a more leisurely and arguably more scenic journey head inland and drive along the R62 through to Outdshoorn, home of the Ostrich farms and Cango Caves. You get a far more rural and therefore local feel than the larger towns. Traditional farms and old style Cape Dutch houses line the route plus off the beaten track craft shops and farm stalls selling hand made farm produce.

Don’t be fooled by thinking because you are in Africa you are guaranteed year round weather. The Western Cape definitely has summer and winter.

Summer can be hot and dry with temperatures in January and February regularly into high 20s and upwards the more inland you go the hotter it gets. You can generally expect pretty consistent summer weather from December to through into April. There is however a chance of a strong South Easterly wind that comes in from the sea and although it brings some respite from the hot weather there can be some strong gusts.

May/June and Oct/Nov are less predictable as the fall between the main seasons. It can be a great time to travel as it less busy, sometimes cheaper and there is chance you could still get perfect weather.

July-September is classified as winter. It is generally cooler, perhaps down to 8 or 9 degrees, so not cold by UK standards but this is when the region expects to receive the majority of it’s rainfall, vital to fill the dams that are virtually drained over summer.

There are still advantages to winter travel, some days can still be fine and this definitely the best time for Whales. If you get a cold rainy day, there are plenty of restaurants where you can cosy up in front of a log fire and enjoy a wonderful glass of local red wine.
