SERRA CAFEMA CAMP

Serra Cafema is located in the extreme north-west of Namibia on the banks of the Kunene River, the only permanent source of water in the region, and just to the south of Angola. Serra Cafema has to be one of the most remote camps in Namibia – if not southern Africa! – and is reached by a three hour light aircraft flight from Windhoek. It can also be reached following a safari in the Etosha or via Doro Nawas – all by light aircraft. The camp itself exudes an air of tranquillity and intimacy and is set amongst an oasis of trees somehow managing to blend rustic and luxury elements in just the right mix.

OVERVIEW

Accommodation at Serra Cafema consists of eight riverside canvas and thatched villas on spacious, elevated decks which blend smoothly into their environment. Each comfortably furnished tent has en-suite facilities, a ceiling fan and mosquito nets. The decking overlooks the river and is a perfect place to read a book or just take an afternoon nap with the gentle sound of the nearby rapids in the background. Serra Cafema also has an intimate and luxuriously furnished honeymoon villa, with possibly the best view of all. Families can be accommodated by opening up adjoining units.

The main guest area, comprises indoor and outdoor dining areas, sunken lounge, library, curio shop and swimming pool, all sharing views of the Kunene River or out onto the Hartmann Valley.

Activities at Serra Cafema involve the exploration of surrounding Namib Desert in open top 4×4 safari vehicles, on quad bikes or on foot. The verdant narrow strip of land and its wildlife – especially monkeys, crocodiles and birdlife – on either side of the river is best seen by boat. But Serra Cafema is not so much about the wildlife as just gaining an understanding of the gentle pace of life that can be achieved and in such stunning surroundings. A particular highlight is a visit to a Himba settlement – one of the last true nomadic people in Africa.
