Desert Rhino Camp is situated in a wide, sometimes grassy valley, in the 1.2m acre Palmwag Concession of the Kunene region of north-west Nambia and is sited amongst rolling landscapes interspersed with rocky outcrops. This region is known as being a true wilderness and offers quiet understated beauty together with a surprising variety of arid-adapted wildlife and the largest free roaming black rhino population in Africa.
Accommodation at Desert Rhino Camp comprises just eight tented units raised on wooden decks, each with en-suite facilities. An extension of the deck forms the front veranda where guests can relax in between activities and just breathe in the landscape and tranquility of the desert and Etendeka Mountains.
The guest areas of the camp consists of a tented dining and lounge area, with comfortable couches at one end and the dining table at the other. The guest area is also on raised wooden decking and is open to take advantage of the panoramic views. Evening meals are usually taken around the fire pit, in front of the lapa, where guests can relax and unwind.
The main activity at Desert Rhino Camp is rhino tracking on foot or in 4×4 safari vehicles by day and night. Other excursions in open top 4×4 safari vehicles are geared at exploring this vast ecosystem with some of the most knowledgeable guides in Namibia.
Apart from rhino, Palmwag Concession’s freshwater springs supports a healthy population of desert-adapted elephant, mountain zebra, giraffe, gemsbok, springbok, kudu and predators such as lion, cheetah, leopard as well as brown and spotted hyaena. Bird life is prolific and diverse with most of Namibia’s endemics present.
