Botswana’s Waterways – Silver
- In Detail
Botswana’s Waterways safari is a 6 night, two camp itinerary focusing on two water activity based camps, one on a permanent water channel in the Okavango Delta and the other on the Savute Channel in the Linyanti.
The safari starts in the central Okavango Delta at Xigera Camp, a stunning tented located on
one of the delta’s permanent crystal clear water-channels before flying northwards to the Linyanti to Savuti Camp, a mixed activity camp on the edge of the Savute Channel. Activities range from game viewing in open top 4×4 safari vehicles and boat safaris through to guided walks and afternoons spent in a mokoro (dugout canoe) gliding silently through the crystal clear waterways.
The Okavango Delta floods annually in late May and this can affect the type and mix of game viewing activities.
The itinerary is tailor made safari and can be adapted to suit your requirements.
Your safari starts and ends in Maun although after Savuti you could extend into the eastern Chobe or to Victoria Falls.

- Day 1
Met on arrival into Maun with a light aircraft transfer to the central Okavango and Xigera Camp for a three night stay. Xigera is a great little Classic grade of camp sited on a small island with a floodplain which floods seasonally (May to September) and a permanent water channel with a bridge connecting it to the ‘mainland’. The presence of year round water allows Xigera to offer a wider range of activities that most camps with 4×4 vehicles, motor boats and mokoro trips all available for all or part of the year. Mid-May is an excellent time to visit as the annual inundation is usually well under way, which brings the area around Xigera to life. The lodge, which has just 10 tented en-suite safari units, each overlooking the channel or the flood plain, has a unique feature in the Okavango; a sand pit at the end of the bridge which becomes the local news story each morning as the guides see which animals have crossed the bridge during the night. Leopard and lion prints are always the favourite news item.
- Days 2 & 3
Land based game viewing activities as arranged by Xigera Camp in open top 4×4 safari vehicles (water level dependant), in boats, on foot or in a mekoro. The latter is a great way to see the Okavango, vehicles allow you to cover more ground, but for a more relaxed and locally informative experience, slipping through the crystal clear waters of the delta in silence, bar the natural sounds, is one not to be missed.
- Day 4
Light aircraft transfer from Xigera Camp to the Linyanti, on the edge of the western side Chobe National Park and Savuti Camp. The Linyanti is more heavily wooded than the Okavango Delta, principally with mopane trees which elephants love to chew on. The denser nature of the bush is also ideal for ambush predators such as leopards to flourish. Just listen to the warning calls of birds and mammals and it’ll tell you that a leopard is nearby. Savuti Camp, located on the banks of the Savute Channel some 10 miles downstream of it source of water, the Zibadianja Lagoon, has just 7 en-suite safari tents (including a family tent) on raised decking with interlinking raised walkways and offers day and night 4×4 safari drives, boating (water levels permitting), a hide, walking safaris and catch and release fishing. It is also one of the very few camps that has a sleep out capability, not on top of your rooms but at a raised location remote from the camp; that’s a great way to really experience Africa.
- Days 5 & 6
Game viewing activities as arranged by Savuti Camp, either in 4×4 safari vehicles, on guided walks and on canoe and boating excursions (water level dependent). The area is renown for huge herd of elephants during the dry season and for leopards as the dense bush suits there ambush style of hunting.
- Day 7
Light aircraft transfer from Savuti Camp to Maun in time for your outward scheduled flight or you may wish to extend your holiday and fly to Kasane and into Victoria Falls or Livingstone to experience one of the natural wonders of the world. May is peak flow, November is ebb flow.
Prices are based on two guest sharing double/twin accommodation throughout.
