Located some 400 miles north of Nairobi and as one of Kenya’s lesser-known and lesser-visited parks, Meru combines the sun-kissed savannah that is so typical of East Africa with the dark, alluring jungle sprouting along the crocodile infested Tana River.
Visitor numbers here will make you feel as if you have the park to yourself, but there is plenty of wildlife. That said the animals are not as accustomed to vehicles as those in the more visited national parks in Kenya, making them more challenging to spot. In the dry season, sharp plains gives way to herds of elephants, buffalo, zebra and waterbuck.
Meru’s claim to fame is Elsa’s Kopje, built on the site of the original camp of George Adamson, and the lioness Elsa, of Born Free fame.
