Day Game Drives
Jao Camp lies centrally within the Jao concession, an area of some 150,000 acres, where the vast open floodplains of the Okavango Delta in northern Botswana provide some of the most stunning scenery and wildlife experiences that Botswana has to offer.
Jao Camp comprises nine spacious, beautifully appointed thatched tented rooms, each with large twin beds and all situated beneath a canopy of trees. The tented rooms have en-suite facilities, as well as an outdoor shower to experience Africa “au naturel”. The rooms are built on a raised deck, with beautiful close-up views of the flood plain; each also has a private “sala” for relaxation between game viewing activities. The main area of Jao has a lounge and dining area, two plunge pools and an outdoor boma for “under the stars” dining. There also a wine “cellar” to complement the excellent dining as well as a spa where a wide range of massage therapies are offered.
Game viewing activities at Jao are seasonal, being dependent on the level of water that flows through the delta, but trips in mekoros (dug out native canoes), boats, day and night game drives in open top 4×4 safari vehicles and birding are offered. Within the Jao concession there are also two hides for a gentle afternoon’s viewing. Red lechwe is abundant, as are their primary predator – lion. Other game typically found in this part of Botswana includes elephant, buffalo, leopard, zebra, wildebeest, and hippo. The bird life is superb, with such species as Meyer’s Parrot, African Harrier Hawk, Black Heron and Malachite Kingfisher often seen.
