Botswana is a land-locked country situated at the heart of southern Africa, bordering Namibia, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe, with the Kalahari Desert forming the vast majority of its area. This predominance of arid land makes for a remarkable phenomenon; the annual flooding of the Okavango Delta, a stunning wetland in the heart of a desert and the world’s only inland delta. The flooding is all the more remarkable as it occurs during the dry season, being created by rain that fell in Angola, many months before and almost 1,000 miles distant; the waters sustaining a huge diversity of fauna and flora before flowing through the Okavango Delta, through the Moremi Game Reserve and disappearing into the sands of the Kalahari.

VISITING THE OKAVANGO DELTA
To the south of the Okavango Delta are the giant salt-flats of the Kalahari Desert such as Nxai Pans and Makgadikgadi Pans and the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, which support a variety of wildlife and birdlife.
To the north-west bordering Namibia and Zambia are the Linyanti and Chobe Game Reserve, both well known for their large elephant and predator concentrations and abundant birdlife.
The gateway to the Okavango Delta and the Central Kalahari is the small town of Maun with daily flights from Johannesburg, the major flight hub for southern Africa. Botswana can also be reached from the north with flights into Livingstone (Zambia), the site of Victoria Falls or into Kasane, on the edge of the Chobe.
Game viewing is excellent throughout the year, with each season bringing its own wonders.
